The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping: How to Buy Furniture and Home Decor Online

Online shopping for your home furnishings only seems to be easy. You imagine yourself lounging in your comfy pajamas on your favorite sofa, finding the perfect deals and good discounts and voila - in one-click your whole room’s decor is purchased!

But in reality, costly mistakes happen more often than we want them to - wrong size, wrong color, damaged shipments, returns and exchanges. A lot of stress and your room is still NOT done.

My clients never have that stress. With my E-Design Service, they get a Design Concept and the Complete Curated Shopping List for a worry-free shopping experience. But there a lot of people who want to shop online themselves. There is nothing wrong with DIY - it's just a matter of preference.

I’ve gotten a lot of questions about online furniture shopping from my interior design consultation clients. During the consultation, we discuss the design concept for their space, and usually they're ready to make purchases themselves. But not everyone knows how to do it. I spent a lot of time explaining my techniques and sharing my tips every time during these consultations, so I finally decided to create this Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping to help my clients to buy Furniture and decor online. And today I'm sharing it with you!

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - How to Buy Furniture and Home Decor Online

No more annoying mistakes and costly returns. This guide will teach you how to make shopping online for furniture and home decor easy and successfully.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 1 - Choose the right store

Not all online stores are equal! To avoid fraud, follow common sense. Choose big, well known reputable retailers. Look for professional and beautifully done websites. Cheap design and a buggy online experience tells you this is not your choice. Also check the physical address of the company. If there is no phone number to contact the customer service, it’s a red flag. Here is my personal List of trusted Canada’s Home Decor Stores to shop online.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping Step 2 - Go TO the store

This is not a tricky one. And yes, we still talking about online shopping, BUT if there's a possibility to see the item with your own eyes, do it! Especially if this is an important piece of furniture like a sofa or a bed.

Our most favorite stores have both physical and online shops. Go to the store – see, feel, try and measure that sofa and be sure that you like it and it fits (have your room measurements with you). Then go home and check the store website. Sometimes, you’ll find online deals and discounts for the same item. And don’t forget the subscription option! Often stores give you the discount on your first order when you subscribe to their mailing list.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 3 - Read the reviews

Whether you saw the item in the store yourself or not – don’t forget to read reviews.  It’s obvious, but don’t just stop on the store’s website. Google the item for reviews outside this store. Search for customer’s photos of the product. Google the brand, the manufacturer. Search Google for this image (right mouse click on the image and choose from the dropped menu).  If the item has no reviews, or Google image search showed that it’s not the genuine image of the product, don’t buy.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 4 - Know what your item is made from

Read the materials section carefully. And google those materials you don’t know. This is your method to understand how the item would feel. The picture doesn’t tell that (and sometimes it is even deceiving). Understand the difference between plastic, laminated surfaces, wood veneers, and solid wood. Google the different type of fabrics and how they withstand the use and abuse if you are looking for seating furniture with high traffic. Don’t just rely on item description - do a bit of research.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 5 - Color magic

Well, this the biggest surprise in the online shopping world. The actual color is never the one that you see on the picture on your screen. So, if there is no possibility to see the item with your own eyes in the store, then please DO NOT EVER try to match it with “the same” color in your room.

Then what do you do? Look for neutral colors like beige, grey, black, and white – these colors most likely work together well even if they are of different shades.

If you want to buy a bright pink color velvet chair – then make it the star of your room. Make it the focal point. And do not try to match other pieces - instead, look for colors that rather relate and coordinate to the ones you already have. For example, millennial pink coordinates with tropical green, ink blue, and atomic tangerine.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 6 - Measure the room

Do not eyeball anything. Please take the measurements of your room and pay attention to the sizes of the furniture and decor items you are buying. It is always good idea to mock up the size of the piece with masking tape. Just tape the perimeter of your sofa right on the floor. We do it all the time in our design work. Also it’s a good idea to make a virtual plan for your room and play a little bit with it – here is a quick and easy to use Room Planner for you.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 7 - Choose shipment and delivery options wisely

There are usually 2 types of delivery: door-to-door and curb-side. Be aware of the delivery cost and weight of the items you order. You don’t want to be stuck outside of your apartment building with a heavy sofa you can’t move.

The best option is white glove delivery – it usually costs extra – but you’ll have an absolutely worry free shopping experience. They deliver, bring it in, unpack and assemble, all in white gloves literally.

If you buy extra big items, make sure they fit through the door – here is a good Guide How to Measure Furniture and Clearances from Urban Barn.

The Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping - Step 8 - Returns

Most online furniture stores accept returns but you usually have to pay for shipping yourself. We do not ever want this to happen with our online purchases, especially with huge furniture pieces. That’s why you should follow the previous steps carefully in order to avoid returns that could be costly and tedious.

Whenever you are on a shopping spree online – please remember my suggestions – they will save you a lot of time and money!

If you have an avid online decor shopper among your friends, save him/her as well and share this Ultimate Guide to Online Shopping with them!

This summer I was so busy! Rather than hitting the pool, though, I was busy providing happy homeowners with E-Design services. But the summer is over and now I’m back to full time work doing my Interior Design Consultations, Virtual Design Services and a lot of other stuff. Did you know that I do so much more than just my regular Design Services at Algorithm Interiors?

Design Consultations and E-Design are my most popular services but there are other things that I offer. These might be something that you need for your home or for your business right now. So read on to find out what they are!

1. I provide re-design and styling services for commercial properties and small business owners.  My recent commercial projects were for retail fashion shops and beauty salons.

3. I can help you make the most of your AirBNB! Another service that I call now – “airbnb styling & stuffing” has been a huge success lately for me. It started as a regular decoration project, but airbnb property is not a regular space. That’s why it stands apart from the regular services I offer. AirBNBs should not be only stylish and pretty, but it also should be comfortable, appealing, and durable.  Also you want to make sure you cover all the basic needs of your guests like bedding, morning coffee, bath towels, and other everyday use items. This is where my expertise plays the main part! I consult the owners on every level of the project, from painting to decorating, assisting with buying durable furnishings, and helping them stage the space for photoshoot to show off their unique Airbnb.

To Decorate or NOT to Decorate

It’s the fall season - the most colourful but most depressive. It’s flu season, it’s the rainy season, it’s the mud season… well.. I’m not a fan of fall. But even during fall we supposed to be perfect moms, understanding friends, supportive colleagues, badass bosses, hot ladies, and your home should look like Architect Digest Magazine Cover. Isn’t it too much?? And the last thing you want to hear is another push to do something.

So today I am not telling you to do things. That's right - I am giving you the permission NOT to do things.

permission fairy

SO - do not worry about your family room being kid’s play area with tons of toys. It’s OK to have toys in the family room when you are a working mom or 2,3,4… In fact, it’s more functional and rational to have kids in the family room playing while you doing your stuff. I’m giving you permission not to sort the toys in different pretty containers and place them in stylish order on your shelving. Just have one big (it could be ottoman with the storage) and toss them all there. Let your kids sort it out themselves when they want to play. Sound satisfying?

Image: West Elm / Carlo Mid-Century 2-Piece Chaise Sectional

I have another one. It’s OK to have zero toss cushions on your sofa! Yes, that’s me, interior stylist, telling you that you can have a pretty sofa without the cushions. You don’t have to worry about mix and match them, how fluffy and good looking are they, you don’t need to change them with the seasons. Just relax. If your sofa is comfortable enough and looks good who cares about the cushions. Just have your partner to cuddle with besides you on the sofa. Does that make you feel better?

Image: West Elm / Valencia 2-Piece Chaise Sectional

Image: West Elm / Valencia 2-Piece Chaise Sectional

And the last but not least – It’s OK to have bare walls! Yes, you heard me. No art, no photo frames, just beautiful bare walls. Don’t spend time stressing about what you should hand on that wall surfing through the online shops or hanging around your local Homesense. Just embrace simplicity and elegance of the room structural elements. Less is more.

If you know someone who needs a permission to relax and finally enjoy his or her Home, share this post with them. Let me help them to see the beauty in NOT doing things like they used to do.

The Ultimate Algorithm (aka Cheat Sheet!) to a Clutter Free Entry during Fall Season

The Ultimate Algorithm (aka Cheat Sheet!) to a Clutter Free Entry during Fall Season

Earlier this June, I shared with you some serious tips on how to make your entryway functional and beautiful all at the same time HERE - How to Decorate a Beautiful and Functional Entryway. I hope you enjoyed decorating your entry and it’s all functional and beautiful now.

The best thing about it – a truly functional entryway doesn’t accumulate clutter. And you know what - let’s test your entry! We have a little help here from our beautiful mother nature. The fall season is coming: more shoes, more coats, hats, mittens and scarfs, and school stuff! This is definitely the clutter-stress-test for our entryway!

If you're already scared, please don’t be! I don’t want you to fail the test, so I created this Ultimate Algorithm to a Clutter Free Entryway with a question sequence you should address to your entryway.

Consider this your Cheat Sheet. If you answer most questions with a YES, your entryway will pass the test! If the majority is NO, then print the Checklist and start working! I included an easy fix and doable tips for every NO.

Here is The Algorithm:

The Ultimate Algorithm (aka Cheat Sheet!) to a Clutter Free Entry during Fall Season

1. Does your entryway closet have enough space for all the seasonal outerwear?

How to check: use my signature formula: household members number X  4 (average outfits number) X 3 inch (minimum space for each outfit) + 12 inch (for guests and extra) = width of your closet in inches.

If your actual closet is wider then this number, answer YES.

If thinner, then answer NO.

How to fix: install a double rod; add hooks and/or clothing rack.

TIP: look for unique and attractive hooks and racks that will add character to your entry even when they're empty.

2. Does your entryway have enough space for footwear?

How to check: count all your shoe pairs for all the household members (there is no average – the shoe mania is a real thing and everyone has a different stage of it). This number X 8 inch (space for each pair) = the overall width of all the shoe shelves in your entryway.

If your shelves altogether width is higher than this number, answer is YES.

If lower, then answer NO.

How to fix: bring in bookcases or a wall cabinet as additional shoe storage. Open shelving or with doors - both can be functional and store all your shoe clutter.

3. Does your entryway have enough space for your accessories?

How to check: Take a look!

if you don’t see scarfs and hats all over sticking out from the closet, then answer is YES.

If you see accessories laying around your entryway: NO. (it’s not always math, sometimes it’s just common sense!)

How to fix: Use baskets for slippers and small items like hats and scarfs.

TIP: put decorative names of your family members on the baskets and store stuff accordingly.

4. Is there a place in your entryway to set down the things you usually carry in your hands when entering the house? (keys/phone/purse/glasses)

How to check: when leaving the house do you often find yourself looking for your keys/glasses or not remembering where you left them?

If not then your answer is YES, you have that handy spot.

If you look for your stuff every time, then NO.

How to fix: bring in a console table, place it close to the door, put a stylish tray on it and toss all the small items like keys on it, or place an extra shelf and/or little hooks within your reach.

5. It there a place in your entryway where to land your b…  oops, I mean where to sit?

How to check: just kidding!

Yes – add one YES to your results,

No – add the NO.

How to fix: look for double duty seating: a chest or bench with baskets underneath. Use it as additional storage for accessories.

6. It there a place in your entryway to set down your bags?

Yes – add one YES to your results,

No – add the NO.

How to fix: use your seating, use your stairs, or use your clothing rack’s lower row of hooks to hang bags.

TIP: don’t put your bag on the floor and teach your kids a good habit early on.

7. Is there enough light in your entryway?

How to check: do you clearly see the things in your closet and inside shelves?

Yes – add one YES to your results,

No – add the NO.

How to fix: your ceiling light should be bright – change the lamp type to LED, more lumens, less wattage; add light to your closet.

8. Did you put away your summer stuff?

This is the reality check! If it's a YES, good for you - you're ahead of the game!

No? That's ok - organize yourself first, and your entryway will be easy to keep clutter free.

Pin for later, share with friends, and don't forget to USE this checklist in your home. Let's beat the clutter this fall!

Nordic Interior Design Style + BONUS

The Nordic style of interior design is gaining extreme popularity nowadays! Also known as Scandinavian Design Style, this is as much a lifestyle as it is a design style. It focuses on simplicity, minimalism and functionality. Buy less, surround yourself with meaningful things, use well-designed and functional products, love your home and enjoy being there – all these are paramount Nordic style characteristics.

Nordic Interior Design Style is my favourite, not only because I’m actually a Nordic soul (born in Latvia, live in Canada – true north!) but also because this style perfectly aligns with my personal beliefs and home criteria.

Nordic Interior Style Guide + BONUS - The Complete Guide to your Nordic bedroom

Let’s dig a little deeper and see why these Nordic Interiors could be one of your admirations, too.

And at the end of this blog post, you’ll find a BONUS – the Complete Guide to Your Nordic Bedroom – you can style you Bedroom like Scandinavians do – complete with all the instructions and all the items (links to Canadian stores).

Natural light is key.

Nordic countries get much less sunlight during long winters, so natural light is nurtured like a queen. Windows are kept unobstructed and walls are painted light colours to bounce the light to reach every dark corner in the house.

Living elements make their way indoors in Nordic Homes. Tulips in minimalist cubic vases, arranged bouquets, succulents and more bring a much-needed touch of colour. Natural elements, such as wood finishes and accessories, botanical prints provide connection with nature.

Warm Textiles.

In cold climate countries, part of the decor comes in the form of warming textiles like sheep skins, wool or mohair throws, and soft cotton and linen. Not only do they provide a feeling of warmth and coziness, they also add another layer of texture to a space.

Black&white photography, inspiration quotes, brush strokes - anything that you love. Lean and layer several different sized pieces of artworks on the floor to get that true Scandinavian feeling.

Lighting.

As the natural light is limited in their houses, Nordic people get really creative with their lighting fixtures: paper lanterns, wooden chandeliers, shade-less lamps and garlands all over the space.

Mini-makeovers for your Home this August

Mini-makeovers for your Home this August

So, it’s August already. What? We just started enjoying our summer and it’s already coming to the end. Yes, fall is around the corner. And for us school-parents, it’s a new year coming and it's sure to be full of new creative ideas and inspiring projects.

August is the month of the year when we wrapping up our summer relaxation mode and transitioning to a new exciting period. To make sure this transition comes smoothly, there are a few things you can do in your home right now. Here they are:

Refresh your bedroom.

You need more energy to be able to accomplish all your creative projects. Better sleep is essential!  So clean your mattress, flip and rotate it. Wash your pillows, or buy new ones if needed. And buy those fancy luxurious linens with the high thread count. Your precious sleep is worth it! (For more tips on this, go HERE!)

Organize the entry storage.

More jackets, shoes, backpacks and umbrellas are coming soon. Make sure you have enough space to store it all. (For even more on this, check out this ARTICLE!)

Set up comfortable working/studying area for your kids - and for yourself, too.

The most important elements here are lighting and seating! Invest in the right chair and your back will thank you. Adjust the working lamp shade so the light doesn’t flare to your eyes. (Want more on fixing up this area of your home? Read THIS.)

Redecorate your coffee table.

Your coffee table is not just a table you put your coffee on. It’s your style island AND your mood generator. As the cooler weather approaches, think about something you could put on your coffee table that would remind you of the happy warm days of this summer.  For me, it would be a sea shell from my ocean vacation, a new Interior Design Book I want to read (and still don’t have time) or just a few new branches we picked with my daughters during our walk in the woods to fill in the vase. (Love these creative ideas? I've got even more for you right HERE.)

Let’s enjoy the last days of summer and use these mini-makeovers to get ready for a beautiful autumn and a new exciting time!
